During the summer of 2008, we needed to replace our digital piano. Mrs.Lorraine Colebrook, a parishioner of ours, generously donated the piano from her home. We are still so grateful for this generous gift. The piano has served our congregation well; however, a combination of heavy use and age has finally caught up with it. For example, a typical piano used in a church requires tuning every 4-6 months, while we must tune ours monthly to keep it usable at mass. Also, with the increased choir member- ship added to our music program, a larger piano is needed to support both our singers and our congregation.
With all of this in mind, it is time for us to invest in the future. After much research, it was decided to purchase a Boston GP-178PE (5’ 10”) Grand Piano, manufactured by Steinway and Sons, one of the world's premier piano builders. The history and reputation of Steinway and Sons proves to us its uncompromising standard for sound, touch, beauty, and investment value when compared to other instruments in a similar price range.
As your music director, I strive to live within my means. Since I have become your music director nearly fifteen years ago, I have made it a priority to watch the budget very closely. Our annual music and liturgy budget will never allow for an investment of this size. The total cost for the piano and accessories is just over $30,000. This is an investment; an investment that will last decades for our parish. Details regarding our fundraiser will be published in the December 17/18 bulletin as we are still finalizing the details.
In this difficult economic time, I realize that raising funds for a new piano will be a difficult feat. The reality is that there is never a good time to ask for money. We must also face the reality that we need a larger and more stable piano to support our music ministry here at Christ the King.
Music is an integral part of our worship and praise to God. I ask you to give significant thought and prayer as to how much you may be able to help us reach our goal. The beautiful music we pray each week and the eucharistic celebration it serves deserves it.
May God bless you, and may your Christmas be one filled with joy and happiness. In peace,
Bill Runge Director of Music and Liturgy
